About Me

ANNE CLEARY

                                                                     Artist Statement

I believe in the importance of imagination, make-believe, magic and mystery, and the truths that are revealed therein. My work is an emotional response to the natural world. Making things is more about discovery than intent, and most of the time I have an inkling of a starting point for a piece, but never know fully where it will take me. The starting point for my pieces is usually somewhere in the murky middle. I work my way out of it through an obsession with color, line, and mood. I work in various media, though predominantly in paint. I make paintings that are layers of color and line that reference flowers, landscapes, lakes, oceans and the woods. Often these imagined worlds are stacked upon each other, and are co-mingled. I am interested in the complex and varied emotionality of places, and the meaning we attach to them, how we feel in them, or gazing at them, removed. They are reflections of our inner psychological and emotional spaces. I am a traveler, capturing these sacred spaces as they are revealed to me, in an attempt to understand human existence in its relationship to the natural world. Discovery happens along the way, and well after the completion of a piece.       Creating art frees me. It is exciting and it allows me to enter fully into a sacred space. It is a powerful pull from somewhere unknown, from unseen guides, real nonetheless. It’s my job as an artist to remain open and pursuant of the journey of making art in whatever form in an attempt to understand a little bit more about myself, others, and how we fit into the world. Sometimes though, my work is a way for me to honor elements of my personal story and family history- an examination of the repercussions of generational emotional damage, of love that hurts, and is hurtful. I picture ancestors, relatives, and important personal places strewn with floral references in motion, going upwards into the firmament. Perhaps they are about growth, and ascension. They are certainly about love, and loss, heartache, and joy. About the need to put it all somewhere. They are a way of showing that we are a part of nature, but nature will always overtake us, and we are powerless over that. There is divine beauty in returning  to the dust that continues to makes living things living. It is an act of faith.

I graduated from Kenyon College in 1993 where I majored in art and studied Engish and music. I went on to graduate school at the Longy School of Music in Boston, and the Jacob's School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington for vocal performance and opera.

I live in the midwest with my three children where I work out of my studio in the top of a barn on our property in Indiana. There is a creek, and a lake, and plenty of room to roam around, taking it all in. In the summer, we head to a lake up north where I work outside most of the time.  My artistic endeavours take on many forms, including visual art, music, and writing.
